What is a Green Zone?

In a military context, a “green zone” is a designated area secured as a safe haven for military personnel, often within a larger zone. It is a place where soldiers can safely prepare, train, and resupply for future operations.

In a civilian context, this is an area designated as safe and welcoming space for military-connected students to interact with faculty and staff within the larger context of the university.

Green Zone Training

In an effort to be increasingly more military-friendly, the Veteran and Military-Affiliated Student Center will facilitate this national program template here at the UofA. The purpose is to educate the campus community on the military-affiliated population and the challenges they face transitioning from military to civilian to student.

Training Outcomes

  • Overview of military experience and transition
  • Introduction to challenges and issues military connected students may encounter while at the UofA
  • Overview of the VMSC and resources available
  • Guidance on how to support military-connected students in the classroom and throughout their student experience

The Green Zone Network

Upon completion of Green Zone training, faculty and staff will be able to lend a sympathetic ear and help veteran and military students identify and connect with appropriate resources. Participants will receive a placard to display in their office and will have the option to be listed as part of the Green Zone Network on the VMSC website.
